Whitehaven In Bloom 1999 |
Once
again Whitehaven has scooped the Cumbria in Bloom Award for the best large town. As can be seen from the plaque in St. Nicholas' gardens Whitehaven has dominated the event for many years. This year Whitehaven also hosted the presentation ceremony in the Civic Hall. Particular merit was noted for the landscaping of Mount Steps and the displays in St. Begh's church grounds. |
The new set piece this year was a splendid sailing ship reflecting the Maritime Festival held earlier. |
The centre of attraction was again St. Nicholas gardens. It is good to see how this church that was burned down in 1971 has been turned into an asset for the whole community. |
As well as the efforts of the council, local businesses joined in with many sporting hanging baskets like these at the Whitehaven News offices. | |
Private homes made their own input - the window boxes on this Irish Street house are especially noteworthy. |
