The lake at Crummock is between the two smaller lakes of Loweswater and Buttermere. A small weir at one end feeds water into the River Cocker which runs through the vale of Lorton to Cockermouth. Looming over one side of the lake is the mountain of Grasmoor flanked by Whiteside and Whiteless Pike. On the other side is the more moderate, saddle topped mountain, Mellbreak from which can be gained great views of all three lakes. Another rewarding climb is that of Low Bank and Rannerdale Knotts, the base of which is covered in Bluebells during May. At the other side of the lake is Scale Force, a waterfall that drops down a narrow gully. Many of these features are managed by the National trust who help maintain the pathways and also provide a car park in Lanthwaite Wood.
