The lake at Ennerdale is the nearest to Whitehaven and provides its drinking water. As a proper road does not run through the valley, it is largely neglected by tourists but is easily accessible to walkers and cyclists. Much of the upper valley is managed by the forestry commission and consists of coniferous forest which slightly detracts from the rugged beauty. However, in recent years projects such as Wild Ennerdale have strived to return it to a more natural state.
