The gardens that surround the ruins of St. Nicholas church in the centre of Whitehaven form a strong part of Whitehaven's challenge for Cumbria in Bloom each year when throughout the summer they are a riot of colour. However, in a mid winter snow everything is a bit more black and white but the use of structural foliage and the ruins themselves keep things interesting. Also, the tower now acts as a cafe to support local charities so it is a good place to pop in for a warming brew.
