Whitehaven harbour seen from mount steps can be seen to be frozen all the way to the Old Quay. The snow fall is lying on top of the frozen water. This situation has been seen a few times since the installation of the sea lock. This is due to the fact that the salt water is diluted by the influx of Pow Beck at this end of the harbour and of course previously the tide caused the water to recede twice a day to leave behind just mud.
