This year's West Cumbria Vintage Rally at Distington was marred by rain during the afternoon. It was unfortunate as Whitehaven Carnival the previous day had been baked in sunshine. After a fire had destroyed a large barn holding some of the local exhibits earlier in the year we can only praise the efforts of the organisers to keep the event going and raising so much money for charity, year after year. However, thousands of people still visited what is one of Cumbria's biggest events and the number of vintage and classic vehicles was a great as ever. |
Music was provided by several fairground organs that had
been lovingly restored, such as the 48 key Remond Duwyn above which was restored by P.
Griffiths of Ambleside. Built in 1938 for Yan Roos of Rotterdam and used until the late
1960's the owner has had to cut all the music due to its rarity. Further music was also played by the band of the Royal Air Force Regiment based at RAF Cranwell. |
Another feature of all the local shows is the craft tent with many goods on display and for sale. The quality of these products gets better each year. |
