It is the central motif on the old Whitehaven baths originally built by Whitehaven Borough Council. It is flanked by two very impressive artistic carvings of a mermaid and Neptune. The baths were first opened in 1884 and featured not only a swimming pool but slipper baths at a time when many houses in town didn't posses a bath or shower. The pool itself had changing cubicles along both sides with viewing galleries above, and featured both springboard and high diving boards.
The building was converted into "The Park" night-club when a new pool was built out of the town centre on Cleator Moor road.
