These are the gates to St. Nicholas church, which burnt down in 1971 leaving only the tower and a few ruins standing. The grounds have been transformed into attractive gardens which provide a welcome area for relaxation in the town centre. I don't think you deserve any points unless you said that these are at the Duke St. entrance and once surrounded the tomb of Sir James Lowther in Holy Trinity church, which stood where the labyrinth can now be found in Trinity gardens. The clue was in the date and the Lowther's heraldry on the shield.
